Black Shadow is my first wearable work that I created in this limited edition series . This work was created in a moment of frustration and anger and so using scraps of black leather that I had lying around in the studio , I took a knife and starting to slash and cut the leather , and to my surprise I really liked the texture and how it looked . I initially had thought of creating a patchwork and make it into a wall handing ,but then I grabbed one of the three mannequins I had in the studio and placed each piece on to it and then not being a great sewer I decided to insert small holes and with a rustic string and safety pins to keep them together and I created and sculpted it all on to the mannequin to create a futuristic and dark artwork
Detail , hand cut black leather
Perennial Sunflower was created by parts of ripped leather in different shapes and sizes , following my two hand cut works . I decided that with this one the leather had already a beautiful texture and it was a bit to hard and thick to cut so I tried the ripping and loved the effect . All the wearable art works from this series have been manipulated by hand using different techniques . The material talks to me and guides me . All the parts of leather were then sculpted on the mannequin and I created a ripped and torn sculptural work that resonates the grandiosity and strength , power , light and hope .
Kalahari is my second wearable work , following black shadow , I continued with the technique of hand cutting and in this case also carving as the leather of this piece is very hard , so I had to carve and cut deep ,in this occasion my inspiration is the lost city and vibrant pink , red and white and sandstone colors of the caves in Petra and the sand tones and ripples of the deserts . I have inserted some patterns of shell like shapes to give depth and profundity
Detail , hand cut and carved leather with printed suede insertions
Bronze leaves like Black Shadow and Kalahari follows the technique of hand cut shapes , I created leaf like forms in the metallic gold leather and the decided to use the dried leaves in my studio and hand painted them with the same tones as the leather to create a camouflage and mimic effect , like with animals and inspired by the color palette of forests
Hand painted real leaves , hand cut leather
